Low-cost air carrier Wizz Air will start flying from Sofia to the German city of Dortmund on October 29 2007.
John Stephenson, chief commercial officer of Wizz Air, said that the flights would take place twice a week and would increase to three times per week around Christmas 2007.
The initial price offered is 24.99 euro, airport taxes included. Booking is already possible through the website of the company.
Wizz Air chose Dortmund because the city is located in one of the most populated areas of Europe and was a successful destination for the company so far.
“Growth will continue,” Stephenson said. The company will be considering flights from Bulgaria to more destinations such as Paris, Brussels and Barcelona.
According to Wizz Air, the market share of the company in Bulgaria reached 37 per cent. The company held nearly 20 per cent of the whole passenger aviation market in the country.
The share of low-cost companies in Bulgaria was rapidly changing and depended on the season, but it was “going quickly to 40-50 per cent,” Stephenson said.
Stephenson also said that the safeguard clause on Bulgaria’s aviation lacked impact on the company’s business, but deprived Bulgaria of some benefits, because Wizz Air could not use its repair base in the country for aircraft that service other destinations.
